Karate returns to the Pan American Games!

The Mexican and Brazilian flags are raised during the Closing Ceremony for the 2007 XV Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Karate will be an official sport of the next Pan American Games held in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011.

Karate reinstated as a full medal sport for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The decision was made during the Pan American Sports Organization General Assembly in Acapulco, Mexico. Each of the of non Olympic Sports which wish to continue on the Pan Am Program must reapply each four years and based upon the performance of the sport in the last Pan Ams the PASO General Assembly will vote in or leave it out.

As part of the process the WKF President Mr. Antonio Espinos was present and made a major presentation to the General Assembly on behalf of Karate not only for the Pan American Games but also for the Olympics for 2016.

Supporting Mr. Espinos was PKF President William Millerson who was very instrumental in making sure that Karate was on the next program.

Looking ahead to 2015 there are 3 cities vying to host the Games-Toronto- Canada, Bogotá-Colombia, and Lima -Peru.
