Please do not write or make any mark on the question paper.

All answers are to be entered on the separate answer sheet only. This question document

together with the answer sheet is to be returned to the examiner(s). You must make sure

that your name and number and any other information required are entered on each

answer sheet.

You may not have any additional papers or books on your desk while taking this

examination. During the examination speaking to another candidate or copying another

candidate's answers will result in automatic failure of the examination. If you are not sure

of the correct procedures or have any questions about any aspect of the examination you

should speak only to an examiner.

The results of this examination will be sent to the USA National Karate-do Federation

national office.

KUMITE EXAMINATION

Section 1. "True or False"

The following questions pertain to USANKF Rules of Competition. On the answer sheet fill in the

circle indicating your answer. The answer to a question is true only if it is true in all situations,

otherwise it is considered to be false. Each correct answer scores one point.

1. Mats are required for all USANKF competitions.

2. The karate-gi jacket must not be more than three-quarters thigh length.

3. The karate-gi trousers must cover at least two-thirds of the shin.

4. The karate-gi jacket sleeve must be no longer than the bend of the wrist.

5. If a contestant's karate-gi jacket sleeves are too long and a suitable replacement cannot

be found in time the Referee can allow him to turn them up on the inside.

6 At the National Championships, RSO or other qualifier event for the National Championships,

USANKF Junior Olympics, and at any United States Team Trials competitions,

only the USANKF patch or emblem may be worn.

7. The red and blue belts must be around five centimetres wide and of a sufficient length to

allow fifteen centimetres free on each side of the knot and not extend below the knees.

8. If a contestant comes into the match are inappropriately dressed he will not be immediately

disqualified but given one minute to remedy matters.

9. At the National Championships, Junior Olympics, and any United States Team Trials

competitions, only USANKF approved fist pads are permitted.

10. In International divisions glasses and athletic safety glasses are not allowed.

11. Groin protectors are not compulsory in all divisions for male competitors.

12. In all divisions an athlete may elect to wear shatter-proof athletic safety goggles of an

approved design.

13. Soft shin pads which do not cover the instep of the foot are allowed in all divisions.

14. In all divisions competitors may elect to use a soft foam head protector.

15. The use of bandages is allowed if approved by the official doctor.

16. No tape shall be applied in more than a single layer on the hands or feet of any

competitor.

17. If after the bout has started a contestant is found not to be wearing a gum-shield the

contestant will be disqualified.

18. The use of orthodontic appliances or braces must be approved by the Referee and

the Official doctor.

19. Duration of the Kumite bout is defined as two minutes (stop time) for ages 14 and

over, and one and one-half minutes (stop time) for ages 13 and under.

20. In Adult International divisions the bout shall be three minutes (stop time) for men

and two minutes (stop time) for women.

21. In any Beginner, Novice, or Intermediate division, the Referee Council may determine

that "running time" shall be utilized to conduct such divisions.

22. The result of a bout (except in International divisions) is determined by the first contestant

to obtain eight points, or at time-up, having the highest number of points.

23. In all Youth divisions (age 13 and younger) should any technique touch the jodan

target the Referee panel will penalize the offender; unless the contact is caused by

the recipient.

24. In Youth divisions (ages 13 and younger) if a contestant is wearing headgear a technique

that touches the headgear can score.

25. In all Youth divisions (Age 14-17) should the hand technique touch the jodan target

the Referee Panel will not award a score.

26. In all youth (age 14-17) and all adult divisions non-injurious, light, controlled

"skin touch" contact to the head, face, and neck is allowed with foot techniques.

27. In Adult divisions non-injurious, light, controlled "skin touch" contact to the head,

face, and neck with all techniques is allowed.

28. If two teams have the same number of victories, the next consideration in deciding the

winner, is to count the points, taking both winning and losing fights into account.

29. In the first round of a team match, a participating team will be allowed to compete only

if all of the team members are present.

30. A kick in the groin will not result in a penalty provided the offender did not do it

intentionally.

31. Category 1 Chukoku are given when the contestant's potential for winning is

not diminished.

32. Category 1 Keikoku are given when the contestant's potential for winning is slightly

diminished.

33. Category 1 Hansoku-Chui may be imposed directly, or following a warning, or a

Keikoku.

34. Hansoku is imposed for serious rules infractions.

35. Shikkaku can be directly imposed without warnings of any kind.

36. There are six criteria to be met in determining a score.

37. In team matches should a team receive Kiken, their score, if any, will be zeroed and

the opponent's score will be set at eight points.

38. Any technique which results in injury must be penalized unless the injury is caused

by the recipient.

39. The throat is a particularly vulnerable area and even a light, controlled "skin touch"

contact should be warned or penalized, unless it is caused by the recipient.

40. If one Judge signals Ippon for Aka, another Ippon for Ao, and the third Mienai the

Referee should give Torimasen.

41. Provided the contestant has not been physically propelled from the area, Jogai occurs

at the moment any part of the contestant's body touches the floor outside of the match area.

42. Any competitor who falls, is thrown, or knocked down, and does not fully regain his

or her feet within ten seconds, will be automatically withdrawn from all kumite

events in the tournament.

43. A contestant who scores and exits the area before the Referee calls Yame will receive

Jogai.

44. In Adult competition a light touch is allowed for Jodan punches and a greater

tolerance is allowed for Jodan kicks.

45. A contestant is not allowed to continue if he is awarded victory by Hansoku and this

is the second time that he has won a bout in this manner.

46. Penalties for mubobi can be assessed only when contact occurs.

47. When a contestant is thrown safely and without injury the Referee should allow two

to three seconds for the opponent to attempt a score.

48. If three Judges signal a score for Aka the Referee does not need to stop the match if he is

sure they are mistaken.

49. If the Referee does not hear the time-up signal the Arbitrator will blow the whistle.

50. Delivering combination hand techniques, the individual components of which both score

in their own right should be given Nihon.

51. A technique which hits the face and causes slight injury, but is caused by the recipient

can still be scored.

52. A contestant should not be penalized for exaggerating if there is an actual injury.

53. If after Yamae two Judges signal Torimasen, and the other Judge Ippon for Ao, the

Referee can give a score to Aka.

54. A contestant who does not obey the Referee's orders will be given Hansoku.

55. The Match Area Controller will order the Referee to halt the match when the Arbitrator

signals a contravention of the Rules of Competition.

56. If two contestants injure each other and are not able to continue, the match is awarded to

the contestant who has amassed the most points.

57. If treatment for an injury is not completed within the time allowed the Referee will

decide if the competitor shall be declared unfit to fight or allow an extension of

treatment time.

58. When applying the "Ten Second Rule" the Referee will signal to the Timekeeper to start

the ten second count-down by a blast on his whistle.

59. A contestant injured in kumite and withdrawn under the ten-second rule may not

compete in the kata competition.

60. If a competitor behaves badly on the competition area after the end of the match or bout,

the Referee can still give Shikkaku.

61. When the Referee stops the bout because he has seen a score and the three Judges signal

Mienai, the Referee will announce Torimasen.

62. If two Judges signal Nihon for Aka and one Judge Ippon for Ao and the Referee wants

to give Ippon for Ao he should indicate why Aka's score is not acceptable and give the

score to AO.

63. When applying the "Ten Second Rule" the Timekeeper will stop the ten second clock

when the Referee raises his arm.

64. If a contestant does not regain his or her feet within ten seconds, the Referee will

announce "Kiken" and "Kachi" to the opponent.

65. If a competitor is thrown and lands partly outside the match area, the Referee will

immediately call "Yame".

66. If three Judges signal Sanbon for Aka when the Referee stops the match, and the Referee

knows that Aka's technique missed, he can signal the Judges to reconsider.

67. If a competitor scores with a strong side kick and propels the opponent out of the area,

the Referee should award Nihon and give the opponent a Category 2 warning or penalty

for Jogai.

68. When the Referee awards a point for a technique which caused injury the Arbitrator

should signal for the match to be stopped.

69. When the contestants clinch or grab each other the Referee will immediately call Yame.

70. When an injured contestant has been given medical treatment and the official doctor

says that the contestant can continue fighting the Referee cannot over-rule the doctor's

decision.

71. When the bout has been halted and one Judge signals a score for Ao, one signals a score

For Aka and the other signals Jogai for Aka, the Referee can give Torimasen.

72. If Aka accidentally kicks Ao on the hip and Ao cannot continue the bout then Ao will be

given Kiken.

73. A competitor who is hit through their own fault and exaggerates the effect should

receive a warning or penalty for Mubobi or exaggeration but not both.

74. If a competitor makes a good chudan kick and the opponent catches the leg a score

cannot be given.

75. When a competitor grabs and throws their opponent and the opponent pulls them down

to the mat and is injured both should receive a warning or penalty.
